Polypectomy

A polypectomy is a procedure to remove a polyp, which is a small, abnormal growth that can form on the lining of different organs.
Polyps are usually benign, but some can become cancerous over time—so removing them is often both diagnostic and preventive.

What is a polyp?

A polyp is a growth that can develop in places like:

  • The uterus

  • The cervix

Types of polypectomy

1. Uterine polypectomy

  • Removes polyps from inside the uterus

  • Usually done with a hysteroscope (through the vagina and cervix)

  • No external incision

2. Cervical polypectomy

  • Simple removal during a pelvic exam

How the procedure works

Depends on the location, but generally:

  • A tool is used to snip or burn off the polyp

  • Sometimes an electrical current is used (similar to LEEP)

  • Tissue is sent to a lab for testing

What to expect

During:

  • Usually minimal discomfort

  • Local anesthesia or light sedation (depending on type)

After:

  • Mild cramping or spotting

  • Quick recovery (often same day)
