D & C

A D&C (short for dilation and curettage) is a common gynecologic procedure used to remove tissue from the inside of the uterus.

What a D&C does

  • Dilation: the cervix is gently opened

  • Curettage: tissue is removed from the uterine lining using a thin instrument or suction

It can be done for diagnostic or treatment purposes.

Why it’s done

A D&C may be recommended for:

  • Investigating abnormal uterine bleeding

  • Removing tissue after a miscarriage

  • Treating conditions like Endometrial hyperplasia

  • Diagnosing or ruling out Uterine cancer

  • Clearing retained tissue after childbirth or abortion

How the procedure works

  • Usually done in a hospital or outpatient clinic

  • You may receive local, regional, or general anesthesia

  • The cervix is dilated using small instruments or medication

  • Tissue is removed using a curette (a spoon-shaped tool) or suction

Time: about 10–30 minutes

What to expect

During:

  • You won’t feel pain if anesthesia is used

  • Some pressure or cramping may occur

After:

  • Mild cramping (like period cramps)

  • Light bleeding or spotting for a few days to a week

Recovery

  • Most people go home the same day

  • Normal activities usually resume within 1–2 days

  • Avoid tampons, sex, and heavy activity for a short period (as advised by your doctor)
